Drone footage capturing the Stelvio Glacier on Sunday, showed the dramatic impact of the summer's heatwaves that have led to a melting of the ice.
Due to the extensive melting of the ice, the local ski plant was forced to suspend its access to the public. It is now possible to see the rock of the mountains, which gives the landscape a particular dark grey colour. However, snow and ice can still... Еще be observed on the Alps' highest peaks.
On Friday the temperature reached a peak of 19 degrees Celsius (66.2 degrees Farenheit), which continued throughout the following week. This is the third consecutive year that low precipitations are recorded on the Alps.
During the last weeks, temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Farenheit) were recorded across southern Europe, affecting Italy, the South of France, the Iberian peninsula, the Balkans and Hungary. Five people were reportedly killed due to weather-related fatalities, and crops were heavily damaged.
