Italy: Dozens of migrants arrive in Lampedusa as reception centre overcrowded

Around a hundred migrants disembarked on the Italian island of Lampedusa in the early hours of Monday morning, after being rescued by the Italian coast guard as they crossed from Tunisia. Dozens of migrants wrapped in thermal blankets could be seen getting off the boats and approaching buses set to take them to the island's already overcrowded reception facility. Over the past weeks, hundreds of people have continued to arrive on Italy's southernmost island, mostly from Tunisia and Libya. On Saturday, Lampedusa's mayor Salvatore Martello called the situation on the tiny island “explosive” as more than 250 migrants from Libya arrived over the weekend.
