Thousands of people took to the streets of the southern Italian town of Riace on Saturday in a show of support for the pro-refugee mayor Domenico 'Mimmo' Lucano, who is currently under house arrest. Over 4,000 people, including both migrants and locals, took part in the demonstration in support of the mayor. Lucano, who achieved worldwide fame for his role in welcoming refugees to the town... Еще, was arrested on charges of aiding immigration last week. Authorities say they are investigating claims of financial impropriety relating to the allocation of public funds intended for the housing of refugees and asylum seekers. Lucano is also under investigation for arranging marriages of convenience for immigration purposes and for fraudulently awarding waste disposal contracts. The demonstrators, however, believe that the investigation is a politically motivated decision by Italy's coalition government, aiming to make an example of someone who is widely seen as a champion for the integration of migrants.
