Israelis living in Tel Aviv have reacted to US President Donald Trump’s decision to formally recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Thursday. Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday during a live televised address from Washington DC and started the process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv. One Tel Aviv resident said Jerusalem was Israel’s capital, but... Еще disagreed with the timing of Trump’s statement, adding that he feared violent reactions. Another resident called Trump’s decision a “political statement that ignores the right of Palestinians to have their own country,” and also expressed fear of violence and “another war.” Trump’s announcement has been met with near universal condemnation from world leaders who believe the decision to recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital jeopardises the Middle East peace process. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and several other ministers in his cabinet have urged countries to follow the US government’s lead and move their embassies to the Holy City. Israel has always claimed Jerusalem as its capital while Palestinians demand that annexed East Jerusalem becomes the capital of a future Palestinian state.
