Israel: Netanyahu expresses sorrow over Russian plane downing

In a call to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his sorrow for the loss of 15 Russian airmen, who lost their lives when their Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane was downed by Syrian defence forces during an Israeli airstrike. “Regarding our relations with Russia, I spoke with President Putin on the eve of Yom Kippur, right before the start of... Еще the holy day. I expressed my regret and that of the citizens of Israel over the deaths of the 15 Russian air crew members, whose plane was brought down by Syrian fire”, Netanyahu said during a televised address from Jerusalem on Tuesday. He went on to blame the “root of the problem” on Iran for their “attempt to use Syrian territory for attacks against Israel and to arm our enemies, such as Hezbollah.” The Israeli prime minister stressed the importance of defending his citizens and maintaining security coordination between Israel and Russia. On Tuesday, the Russian Defence Ministry stated that a Russian Il-20 jet was downed by the Syrian Air Defence Forces after an Israeli F-16 used it as cover during its missile attack on Syrian targets. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, four Israeli F-16 fighter jets attacked Syrian targets near the Latakia city on Monday evening after approaching them from the Mediterranean Sea.
