Ireland: New Taoiseach Michael Martin elected after historic coalition deal

Republican party Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin has become the new Prime Minister of Ireland after a historic coalition that took place at the Dublin Convention Centre on Saturday. The election is the first time Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Green party will govern together, as Fianna Fail and Fine Gael are civil war rivals. Green Party leader, Eamon Ryan, was seen arriving at the Convention Centre before Martin walked out escorted by police officers, and received a large applause. Martin reportedly won with 93 votes in favour and 63 against. The vote was held at Convention Centre Dublin instead of Leinster House due to social distancing regulations. Michael Martin replaces Leo Varadkar as Ireland's new Taoiseach.
