Iraq: 'We are fed up' — Erbil Kurds rally for independence ahead of referendum

About 150,000 gathered inside the Franso Hariri Stadium in Erbil, Friday, in a pro-Kurdish independence rally, only days before the non-binding referendum on Kurdish independence. Thousands more ad to wait outside the stadium because of the immense crowds inside. President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Masoud Barzani attended the rally and spoke to the crowds, while his supporters waved the Kurdish... Еще flag and chanted «freedom this time, years of being subordinates will be over.» The Kurdish independence movement gathered momentum after government-backed Iraqi forces withdrew from areas controlled by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL), leaving largely Kurdish forces to regain, and expand, their territory in northern Iraq. The referendum on Kurdish independence is set to take place on September 25, despite opposition from Baghdad and neighbouring Turkey and Iran.
