Iraqi President Barham Salih appointed the former governor of Najaf, Adnan al-Zurfi, as the country’s new Prime Minister-designate, on Tuesday, and assigned him the task of forming the government.
Saleh called on the prime minister-designate to form a government «capable of serving the Iraqi people and eliminating the suffering they endure these difficult days, to overcome the crisis and... Еще achieve the fair elections desired by the Iraqis,» during the ceremony which took place in the Presidential Palace in Baghdad, wishing him success in his new tasks.
«The primary duty of this government will be to conduct early elections that would give the Iraqi people complete freedom in deciding their future. There is no doubt that the country is facing serious crises and challenges, including the health crisis, the financial crisis and other serious challenges,» said President Salih.
The former prime minister-designate, Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi, had withdrawn his candidacy on March 1 after failing to put together a government earlier this month, citing parliamentary deadlock.
