Iraq: Massive crowd of worshippers commemorates Ashura in Karbala

Muslim worshippers flooded Al-Abbas Mosque in Karbala to attend the annual Ashura commemoration on Sunday, despite the health concerns stemming from the coronavirus pandemic. Devotees were seen marching or running through the streets, while performing various rituals. Worshippers could also be seen carrying a very large banner reading «We are here for you Hussain» in Arabic. Ashura, which takes place on the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic Hijri calendar, is a day of mourning which commemorates the killing of Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, as well as his family and companions at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram, 61 AH (10 October 680 AD).
