Iraq: Kurdish referendum to be held «because all our previous attempts had failed» — Barzani

President of Iraqi Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani stated that the Kurdish independence referendum will be held «because all our previous attempts had failed», speaking during his to visit to Kirkuk Province, Tuesday. Barzani noted that «with all the injustices that the people of Kurdistan were exposed to, especially after the 1991, when the political leadership in Kurdistan went to negotiations... Еще and shook hands with the ones committing these crimes, they tried to open a new chapter, for these sacrifices were not for personal reasons but for the cause». He went on to say that the main goal of people of Kurdistan was «always peace and never war», before adding that «war was never our choice, but we were forced into it». On September 25, Iraqi Kurds are scheduled to vote on whether to secede from the rest of Iraq. Earlier on Tuesday Iraq's parliament rejected the Kurdish plans, claiming that the referendum is unconstitutional.
