Iraq: Iraqi forces enter Kirkuk as Baghdad-Kurdistan tensions soar

Iraqi government forces and 'al-Hashd al-Sha'abi', also known as the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), have entered Kurdish-controlled city of Kirkuk, reportedly capturing several neighbourhoods, Monday. Clashes broke out south of the city and in casualties, according to the Kurdish Peshmerga forces. Tensions between Baghdad and Iraqi Kurdistan have been brewing since Iraqi Kurds... Еще overwhelmingly voted for secession in a September 25 referendum that Baghdad rejected as illegal. Kurdish Peshmerga forces took control of oil-rich Kirkuk after the Iraqi army fled a major offensive by the Islamic State in 2014.
