The Iraqi Army, supported by the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), launched the third stage of the 'Will of Victory' security operation to pursue remnants of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) in areas west of Nineveh and eastern Diyala as footage shot in Tal Zalat, Nineveh Governorate on Monday shows.
The commander of the operation's PMF forces, Abu Sidra Alturkmani... Еще, said that it was «very quick» and that they had checked «15 villages,» adding that they had destroyed six IS hideouts.
IS militants quickly advanced in summer 2014 taking over much of northern and western Iraq after occupying large areas of northern Syria. In November 2017 the self-proclaimed state collapsed after Iraqi and Syrian armed forces recaptured the militant group's last major strongholds. The ongoing 'Will of Victory' operation began on July 7 and aims to target IS sleeper cells in the remote territory between the provinces of Dilaya, Saladin, Anbar and Nineveh.
