Iraq: French foreign minister on first trip outside EU since COVID outbreak

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian held talks with Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein in Baghdad on Friday as he came on his first official visit outside the EU since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Speaking at a news conference following the talks, Le Drian stressed that Iraq had the full support of France in the fight against Islamic State and the reconstruction process. ''We were there for you in the battle, now we are here for you in the recovery time», said Le Drian announcing a one-billion-euro aid package for the post-war recovery of Iraqi infrastructure. The minister added that Iraq should 'dissociate itself from the regional tensions and to find its first-plan role as a power of balance in the Middle East'.
