Iraq: Clashes in Kirkuk between Peshmerga fighters and government troops

Iraqi government troops aided by Shia militia Hashd Shabi have clashed with Kurdish Peshmerga forces outside the city of Kirkuk, Monday. Footage shows a road in Kirkuk allegedly hit by artillery strikes. Iraqi Joint Operations Command claim that its troops have taken control of several areas including the North Gas Company and the Kirkuk power station. According to a statement issued by the... Еще Kurdistan Regional Security Council, Iraqi forces and Shia militias advanced from Taza Khormatu towards the southwest of the city of Kirkuk. Tensions between Peshmerga fighters and Iraqi forces have been brewing since Iraqi Kurds overwhelmingly voted for secession in a September 25 referendum that Baghdad rejected as illegal. Kurdish Peshmerga forces took control of oil-rich Kirkuk after the Iraqi army fled a major offensive by the Islamic State in 2014.
