Iraq: Clashes break out as hundreds fill central Baghdad in new anti-government rally

Police deployed water cannons on anti-government protesters as hundreds gathered on Republic Bridge in central Baghdad on Sunday. A large plume of smoke could be seen towering above the bridge as protesters set fire to tires, threw stones at police who deployed water cannons to disperse the crowds. The rally comes just days after the formation of a new government and despite the promise of new... Еще Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi to free demonstrators arrested during last October uprising. Soon after the appointment of the new government, activists urged citizens on social media to resume their protests. In October 2019, mass protests erupted in the capital and southern cities, with citizens demanding an end to corruption and unemployment and an overhaul of the ruling class.
