Dozens of lawyers gathered in front of the headquarters of the Court of Appeal in the oil-rich province of Basra on Tuesday to decry the killing of their colleague, Jabbar Karam al-Bahadli, who was reportedly shot by unidentified gunmen. On Monday, an unnamed armed group attacked lawyer Jabbar Karam al-Bahadli in Basra province. Bahadli had been defending detained demonstrators who were condemning the lack of jobs and suffering services in the region. The cause and identities of the perpetrators of the assassination have not yet been confirmed. The area has been experiencing civil unrest of late as anti-government rallies over poor economic growth and bad social services have swept across the southern part of the country.
