The Green Zone in central Baghdad reopened to the public on the first day of Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday, a day that marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Vehicles can be seen circulating in the area, in the presence of military units.
The high-security zone will be open around the clock.
Major General Jassim Yahya Abd Ali said that Iraqi officials «began work more than six months ago... Еще to lift the concrete blocks inside and outside the perimeter of the Green Zone and the opening of this road relieves the burden on the Iraqi citizen in terms of traffic.»
The Green Zone, or International Zone of Baghdad, is a 10-square-kilometre (3.86 square mile) area in central Baghdad that is home to the US Embassy in Iraq and to Iraqi government offices. This area had been closed and inaccessible to the public since the 2003 US invasion.
