Iran: 'We are not afraid and we have never been afraid' — Tehran residents respond to Trump

Journalist (Farsi): «Do you think there are any problems in the society that have been caused by the sanctions?» Local (Farsi): «Yes they are, it's a cruelty that is being done to some countries especially Middle Eastern countries. And we don’t have power to produce some things that we need, but on the other hand, we have made a lot of progress so far, and if we continue we are going to have... Еще more achievements. But the main point — nation should stand together. Giving up to America not only doesn’t make the conditions better, but also would have worsened what we have now.'' Tehran's citizens responded to US President Donald Trump's statement on Iran during his speech at the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on Tuesday. Residents of Iranian capital discussed the sanctions, relations with the US and the rest of the world. One Tehran local said that the US is 'the only country' that doesn’t see Iran complying with the international requirements.» Another resident noted that 'Iranian nation should stand together' adding that, ''Giving up to America not only doesn’t make the conditions better, but also would have worsened what we have now.'' She, however, went on to say that the sanctions also made it possible for Iran to achieve «a lot of progress.» In other resident's opinion, the sanctions are not ''the matter of fear'' but they still have a ''negative impact'' on the ''lives of ordinary Iranians''. Trump criticised Iran’s government during his maiden speech the UNGA on Tuesday, leaving open the possibility that the US will unilaterally pull out of the UN-backed nuclear deal with the country — which he labelled an «embarrassment» — and urged the Iranian people to confront their government.
