Iranian President Hassan Rouhani departed Tehran for the Russian city of Sochi on Wednesday, to take part in a trilateral presidential summit to discuss the political future of Syria. Rouhani will attend the talks alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Hassan Rouhani. Speaking at Mehrabad Airport prior to his departure, Rouhani stated that «terrorism as a tool in the... Еще region will be unsuccessful.» He went on to say that Iran would not permit a change in the Middle East’s boundaries, nor «interference of foreign powers,» most notably from United States and Israel, Rouhani said. He added that Iran was not seeking tensions in the region, accusing the United States and Israel of doing so. The Iranian President applauded recent defeats of the so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Iraq and Syria by the hands of «warriors of Islam.» A victory against IS would not automatically entail the end of the issue of terrorism or IS in the region, Rouhani cautioned. That aside, he stressed that «their bases have fallen.» The talks come amid hope that the civil war is coming to an end and that victory against jihadist groups is imminent.
