A gas tank exploded at a public storage facility near a military base in Parchin, close to Tehran on Thursday night, according to the Iranian government. The announcement follows reports of a massive explosion lighting up the sky south-east of Tehran late on Thursday.
«Gas leaks in these tanks which are actually filled by hand caused this explosion,» explained Deputy Minister of Culture and Spokesman of the Iranian Ministry of Defence Amir Davood Abdi, speaking Friday.
The exploded tanker can be seen blackened and damaged by the blast.
As the facility was located in a non-residential mountainous area, there were no casualties, the spokesperson said.
«The situation was immediately controlled by the firefighters and the fire brigades,» Abdi added.
