Iran: Tehran residents criticise plans to block Instagram

Iranians living in the capital city of Tehran criticised government plans to block the social media service Instagram on Thursday. «I think it will backfire, as did their policies towards many other applications in the past. Because everybody is using VPNs and proxies to access the blocked apps. And people are sure to do so for Instagram,» said one local. Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and the... Еще instant messaging service Telegram are all already banned in Iran but many citizens reportedly circumvent blocking through the use of VPNs and proxy services, and many locals agreed that this would only be repeated in the event of Instagram being banned. Others criticised the proposed ban for its potential economic impact, with one resident expressing their belief that «blocking Instagram is a really bad idea, because many jobs have been created based on this app. Many people are making a living from it.» Iran's National Cyberspace Council reportedly approved measures to block the image sharing service on Wednesday, although a timetable for the move has yet to be announced officially. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani currently has over 2.2 million followers on Instagram and over 800,000 followers on Twitter, despite it being blocked in Iran since 2009.
