Thousands attended a funeral procession for reportedly 150 soldiers of the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) in an area adjacent to Tehran University on Thursday.
The coffins of the mostly unidentified soldiers were draped in the flag of Iran and were saluted by citizens while the funeral procession took place. The remains were reportedly largely repatriated from neighbouring Iraq.
The Chief Justice of... Еще Iran Ebrahim Raisi attended the ceremony using the platform to call Iranians to «resistance» against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Iran and the US.
«It was a holy hand that pulled the trigger and destroyed the US drone and proved that Iran has no doubt in its resistance,» said Raisi referring to Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)’s downing of a US drone on June 20.
Brigadier General Bahman Kargar who acts as the Head of the Foundation for Preservation of Holy Works and Values of the Sacred Defence was among the senior military officials who attended the processions.
«Despite economic problems and the US’s oppression against Iran, people stand up for their aims and these people are welcoming these dear great martyrs,» said Kargar who added people were ready to defend Iran as the 'martyrs' did in the Iran-Iraq War.
