Iran: Rouhani calls Trump's nuclear deal exit 'stupid'

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stated that US President Donald Trump's exit from the nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was «stupid.» The comment was made during a speech held in Tehran on Wednesday. «Under the pressure of extremists in America, Israel, and Saudi Arabia, and for Trump's opposition to the ex-US president, Americans adopted a very stupid... Еще measure and withdrew from the JCPOA,» Rouhani said. «They have realised that they made an enormous mistake, that they withdrew from the JCPOA and also made a big mistake by violating the JCPOA. They cannot do anything now.» The president said that in case the US continues to push ahead with plans to extend an arms embargo on Iranian trade, which is set to be lifted later this year by the United Nations, they will face a tough response from Iran. «No matter if we build or buy weapons, they would be for defending ourselves and defending other nations,» he added. In May 2018, the Trump administration withdrew from the deal which the Obama administration, Iran and the European Union signed in 2015, and re-imposed sanctions on Iran. A year later, Rouhani announced that Iran would no longer be abiding by the JCPOA's restrictions on nuclear research and development, shortly before the US imposed further sanctions on Tehran. **RESTRICTIONS: NO Access Israel Media/Persian Language TV Stations Outside Iran/Strictly No Access BBC Persian/VOA Persian/Manoto-1 TV/Iran International**
