Riots that had erupted across Iran after the government announced a 50 percent hike in petrol prices took only 48 hours to be contained according to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani speaking in Tabriz on Wednesday.
«They never thought that after finding a good opportunity to bring people to the streets and bring their mercenaries to the streets, it will only take 48 hours [for the riots] to be... Еще terminated,» said Rouhani.
The president also praised Iranians for their strong presence in squashing fuel riots.
«When a bunch of hooligans behaves in this way, the best response is given by our people… the strong punch of the people and national power are demonstrated by the presence of the people,» said Rouhani who joined other Iranian military officials in blaming the US of trying to exploit the unrest to seed further chaos.
Protests erupted across Iran after the government announced a 50 percent hike in petrol prices and introduced fuel rationing.
The government said that the income generated from the reform would help to purchase basic goods and medicines, pay pensions and employees of state-owned institutions, easing the burden of US sanctions on the national economy.
The protests have since been contained.
