Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani compared the airstrike authorised by US President Donald Trump that killed Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani, to the US-led coup d'etat against Iran in 1953, while speaking in Parliament in Tehran on Sunday.
«Mr Trump, you committed a great crime. Your name will be remembered in History next to crimes including 1953 Iranian coup d'etat and the downing... Еще of the airbus [Iran Air flight 655 in 1988],» Larijani said. «The brutal action of the US President is regarded as a terrorist and war operation.»
He went on to dismiss the notion that the airstrike was pre-emptive, saying, «What allegedly happened that drove you to take pre-emptive action? US authorities said that general Soleimani had wanted to take some actions against the US forces in Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq. This claim is nothing but a lie.»
«Mr Trump, this is the voice of the Iranian nation,» Larijani said as members of parliament chanted «death to America.»
Soleimani and the deputy leader of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Mohammed Ali Ebrahimi, also known as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, were killed by a U.S. airstrike on Friday near Baghdad's airport in Iraq, triggering escalations of tensions in the region.
