Iran: First Friday prayers held in Tehran since Ukraine plane crash

The first Friday prayers took place across Tehran since the crash of Ukrainian International Airlines flight PS752, as well as one week on from the US assassination of the Iranian Quds Force General Qasem Soleimani. Imam Muhammad Javad Haj Ali Akbari lead the prayers at the Imam Khomeini mosque where he attacked the US, saying «now on, US interests across the world will be exposed to extensive... Еще threats.»«This dominating regime has many military bases; from now on, having too many bases, especially in this region, will not act as an advantage for them,» the cleric added. After the prayers, some locals commented outside the mosque about their thoughts on the Ukrainian airliner crash. «If an airplane is hit in the air by a missile, it will be destroyed in the air and its parts will be scattered for kilometres. It's not like the plane can come down safely and then explode in just a limited area,» said one resident. A total of 176 people died when flight PS752 crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport en route to Kiev, on Wednesday. A diplomatic spat over the causes of the crash is now underway. Western leaders said an Iranian missile caused the downing of the Boeing 737-800, possibly in error. Iran has denied that a missile strike from its air defence systems was responsible.
