Britain’s proposal to implement a European-led naval mission to escort tankers in the Persian Gulf was characterised as “provocative” by the Iranian government’s spokesperson Ali Rebiei speaking in Tehran on Sunday.
“We think such actions are threatening in the current situation, contain hostile messages and will escalate tensions,” stated Rebiei.
He added that Tehran believes it is countries... Еще in the region that should maintain security in the Persian Gulf and continued: «Iran is the greatest defender of the security for shipping in the region.”
On July 21, Westminster called for its European allies to form a «maritime protection mission» in the Strait of Hormuz in response to Iran’s actions.
According to an Iranian state-run news agency, the British-flagged Stena Impero tanker seized on July 19 was using the exit lane to enter into the Strait of Hormuz, almost colliding with other vessels.
