Iran: Erdogan touches down in Tehran ahead of state visit

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has touched down in Tehran and is to hold meetings with Iranian President Hassan Rohani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday. The recent Kurdish independence referendum is expected to top the agenda, as Ankara seeks to prevent Kurdish self-determination through sanctions and the closure of borders. Ankara and Tehran, who hold their own... Еще significant Kurdish populations, are opposed to Kurdish succession from Iraq, in fear that independence aspirations in northern Iraq would spill over and encourage their own Kurdish populations to pull away. The meeting has been expected since August but with an original focus on cooperation in the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ ISIL).
