Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that the country’s people had managed to defeat a «deep, vast and very dangerous conspiracy» in the petrol riots that took over the country in the past weeks. He made the remarks at a meeting with Basij members in Tehran on Wednesday.
«They [the enemies] had intended to cause destruction, villainy, and massacre as they saw the issue of petrol as... Еще an opportunity to bring their army [of rioters] into the arena,» said Khamenei.
He went on and accused the United States of «insulting the freedom and independence of nations» over its oil ambitions.
'Americans enter the eastern region of the Euphrates in Syria and announce that they are there because of the oil. Is that your house? It is another country. The United States announces that here there is oil and we have come for the oil. How rude.»
Tehran has repeatedly accused the US of instigating the petrol riots.
Recent protests in Iran were triggered by an announcement of at least a 50 percent increase in gas prices in Iran on November 14. The government said that the income generated from the reform would help to purchase basic goods and medicine, pay pensions and employees of state-owned institutions, and ease the burden of US sanctions on the national economy.
The countrywide anti-government protests in Iran have been since been contained.
