Indonesia: Locals flood markets ahead of Eid al-Fitr celebrations despite COVID-19 restrictions

Residents packed local markets to stock up on essential items ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, on Wednesday. The Ciputat Market in Ciputat District in South Tangerang was seen flooded with locals, many ignoring social distancing advice and several not wearing face masks, as they looked to purchase fresh produce. Eid al-Fitr or Idul Fitri is a major religious holiday in Indonesia, the country with the world's largest Muslim population. The celebration in 2020 starts on the evening of May 23 and will end on the evening of May 25. The feast is characterised with an abundance of food after the daytime fasting of the month of Ramadan.
