Thousands flooded the streets of the southern city of Kalapet on Thursday, to take part in a religious procession during the 'Panguni Uthiram' Tamil Hindu festival.
Male devotees had their backs pierced with hooks. Some were suspended from a roundabout, others from a crane while others pulled a cart carrying a figure of the Hindu God Murugan.
Acts of self-affliction are carried out in the hope... Еще of receiving blessings from the deity.
The Panguni Uthiram festival is celebrated in Murugan Temples across India and more typically South India, as well as in Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
