India: Rajasthan farmers go neck-deep for land deal protest

Scores of farmers buried themselves neck-deep in Nindar village, about 20km from Jaipur city, Rajasthan, on Thursday, as part of a protest against the government's plans to take their land. The government issued a notice for the acquisition of 540 acres of farmers' land in 2010. The action will cost landowners their livelihoods, and those protesting have said that the compensation being offered... Еще is not enough. Farmers have observed non-violent protests for the past two weeks. The new wave of protests, which includes sitting and standing in self-made pits, was adopted on Monday to mark the anniversary of India's Independence Movement leader Mahatma Gandhi.
