Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi heralded the start of a «new era» in Jammu and Kashmir as he defended his decision to remove the region's special status in a televised address from Delhi on Thursday.
The move would extend «equal rights» to the disputed territory while also helping in the fight against Kashmiri «militants and separatists».
Later in the speech, Modi confirmed that special... Еще arrangements were being made for the Islamic holiday of Eid allowing those wishing to return to their homes to do so.
Indian-administered Kashmir has been on lockdown since the Indian government decided on Monday to strip the region of its autonomous status under Article 370 of the constitution.
India and Pakistan have fought two wars over the disputed territory, which remains the scene of frequent tensions.
