A crowd gathered outside the Tihar prison complex in New Delhi on Friday, as four men convicted of raping and murdering a young woman on a bus in 2012 were executed.
Protesters and activists rallied with signs and Indian flags, while security was guarding the gates of the Tihar jail.
«We are really feeling relieved, because this is going to send a very, very strong message in our society where... Еще the boys they think that women are objects, and they can do anything, anytime. They will think a hundred times before committing such a crime,» said activist Yogita May.
«If this is going to serve as deterrence or that is going to give a very, very strong message,» she added, calling the execution «history in making.»
Reports indicate that the convicts' last legal challenges were rejected overnight and they were hanged.
The four men raped and assaulted the 23-year-old victim with an iron bar on a moving bus, leaving her mortally injured.
The victim, a physiotherapy intern, came to be known as «Nirbhya,» or «the fearless one,» as she could not be named under Indian law.
