India: Chilkur Balaji Temple holds special prayers to ward off Coronavirus

Over 2,000 worshipers attended a special prayer at the Chilkur Balaji Temple in Hyderabad on Thursday, believed to ward off the deadly Coronavirus. The prayer, Apamarjana Puja, was offered to the Hindu deity Vishnu. During the prayer, priests recited a few slokas from the Apamarjana Stotram and Sudarshana Ashtakam. It is believed that these slokas (poetic forms or songs) purify a person's body... Еще and mind, thus helping them get rid of all illnesses. The priests recited the slokas for 45 minutes and later sprinkled the holy 'Ganga Jal' water from the Ganges river, over the worshippers. The head priest in the temple, C.J. Rangarajan, said that «today is also emergency situation, not only at Chilkur, the Vatican has prayed. In Malaysia, there are Masjids [Mosques] which are offering special prayers.» The Chilkur Balaji temple has performed similar prayers in the past against the economic crisis and the agrarian crisis that led to a jump in farmer suicides, as well as during the swine flu epidemic. According to the head priest Rangarajan, the temple, which is one of the oldest temples in Hyderabad, has been receiving a lot of requests from devotees to conduct special prayers against the Coronavirus.
