Hungary: Putin attempting to 'drive wedges between friends in NATO,' claims Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed that «an authoritarian Russia will never be a friend to the freedom and sovereignty of smaller nations» noting that Hungarians know this «all too well from their history,» while speaking at a joint press conference with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in Budapest on Monday. Pompeo said that Russian President Vladimir Putin must not be allowed... Еще to «drive wedges between friends in NATO,» adding that «you need look no further than Ukraine» to see why increased defence spending and support for NATO was needed. The secretary of state also sought to warn the Hungarian government of the purported pitfalls of increased links with China, alleging that «Beijing's handshake sometimes comes with strings; strings that will leave Hungary indebted both economically and politically.» Szijjarto explained that while Hungary has «done everything possible» and «carried out every investment to be able to purchase gas from other sources,» Central Europe remains locked in a «one-sided energy dependence on Russia.» «We are now in a situation where it is exclusively up to our allies whether we can diversify our gas sources,» he added. Pompeo went on to re-affirm his government's «determination to compete for positive influence in the [Central Europe] region.» Pompeo's arrival in Budapest marks the start of a tour of Europe, which will see the secretary travel to Slovakia on Tuesday before participating in a conference on security in the Middle East in Warsaw.
