Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Budapest on Sunday to condemn a proposed bill aimed at nationalising the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) effectively turning its control over to the state.
Protesters marched on the MTA building carrying banners and placards rejecting the proposed bill put forth by the government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
The protest came after... Еще Hungarian online news outlet 'Index' reportedly leaked the bill draft, detailing the planned take-over by the Hungarian Minister of Innovation and Technology Laszlo Palkovics, projecting to come into effect on August first.
«These kind of things do not happen in democracies, no matter what Laszlo Palkovics is saying about it,» said a MTA academic addressing the protesters.
Based on the bill, Palkovics will require the MTA to hand over its assets to the government for free use and also remove its 15 independent research networks.
