Tens of thousands of people filled the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday, in a huge mass demonstration against the government's proposed extradition bill, which would allows criminals to be sent to mainland China for trial.
Protesters, including students, critics and lawyers, descended onto the streets dressed in white, and carrying signs reading «No China Extradition.»
The bill would allow... Еще authorities from mainland China, Taiwan and Macau to make extradition requests for suspects accused of criminal acts, including murder and rape.
Critics fear the legislation would leave people in Hong Kong vulnerable to extradition for political or religious reasons, beside undermining the city's semi-autonomous judicial system.
Authorities in Hong Kong assured that they will have the final say on each extradition request and those accused of political and religious crimes will not be sent to China.
However, lawmakers stressed that a guarantee of a fair trial will not be written into the bill.
