Hong Kong: Thousands join anti-govt demo celebrating 30th anniv. of 1989 revolutions

Thousands of anti-government demonstrators gathered at Hong Kong's Edinburgh Place on Sunday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Revolutions of 1989, as well as to protest against Hong Kong's government. Protesters built a wall to resemble the Berlin wall, which fell in November 1989, and sprayed messages as well as pictures on it. One of the images resembles the famous «My God, Help Me to... Еще Survive This Deadly Love» painting on Berlin's East Side Gallery depicting the Marxist-Leninist ritual fraternal kiss between then GDR General Secretary Erich Honecker and the then General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Leonid Brezhnev. Hong Kong's graffiti painting shows Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the same pose. Hong Kong has been rocked by protests sparked by a now-withdrawn extradition bill since March. The rallies have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by violent clashes between protesters and the authorities.
