Heavy clashes erupted in Tsim Sha Tsui area of Hong Kong on Monday, as protesters, many of them wearing masks and using umbrellas as shields, tried to flee the campus of the Polytechnic University (PolyU) after nearly a week inside.
Protesters were filmed clashing with law enforcement using stones and other objects, while riot police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

As local media report, police have already made at least 40 arrests of students trying to break through a security cordon at the university campus on Monday.
The Polytechnic University has become the scene of the tensest confrontation between police and protesters in more than five months of political unrest.
Hong Kong has been rocked by protests sparked by a now-withdrawn extradition bill since March. The rallies have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by violent clashes between protesters and the authorities.
