One of the Hong Kong government's responses to the next wave of the COVID-19 outbreak has been to transform a popular sports centre in the Sai Ying Pun district into a coronavirus testing facility, as seen on Friday.
The Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Sports Centre has been transformed against the wishes of some local community members who complained outside the venue.
«I won't come here to do exercise anymore if the sports centre is being used as a COVID-19 test centre,» said local resident Mr. Mak.
It has been reported that the Hong Kong government plans to select more stadiums, event spaces and holiday camps to convert them into community treatment facilities and use them to assist in testing as is the case at the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Sports Centre.
Some opposition politicians organised a small scale protest outside the sports centre, blaming Hong Kong's reliance on the mainland for goods and services for the strain on the local health system.
«Three Chinese institutions have also been hired as testing companies, what the Carrie Lam government is totally ignoring will break the medical system in Hong Kong, we strongly condemn it,» said District Councillor Roy Tam Hoi-pong.
