Thousands of protesters gathered at the Convention and Exhibition Centre, surrounding the police barricade in Bauhinia Square on Monday, where the celebrations for the 22nd anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to China are scheduled to take place.
Footage shows a large police presence around the convention centre which was closed on Saturday ahead of the protests. Helicopters are also seen... Еще bringing the Chinese and Hong Kong flags which are raised as part of the Chinese rule anniversary celebrations.
Protesters also stormed Hong Kong’s Legislative Council on Monday.
The protests, among the largest in Hong Kong’s history, have seen hundreds of thousands gather in the streets since the end of March, against an extradition bill which opponents say would chill political speech in the Chinese territory as it would enable Hong Kong to consider extradition cases to mainland China for some crimes.
Protests continue despite Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam announcing an indefinite suspension of the extradition bill. Protesters are now demanding Lam's resignation and a complete repeal of the bill.
