Demonstrators held a protest marking US Independence Day in front of the US Consulate in Hong Kong, on Saturday.
Protesters were stopped and searched by the police upon arrival. One demonstrator complained that they had been prevented from wishing the US «happy birthday,» and expressed his fear that the police «will arrest me for no reason.»
Police can be seen at one point dropping a US flag on the ground that they have taken from a demonstrator.
One protester shouted across to the consulate building, saying «We love Trump! We love USA!»
Tensions are running high between the US and China after Washington criticised Beijing's recent imposition of a new national security law in Hong Kong.
The US passed sanctions in response to the new law on Thursday. The sanctions will penalise banks doing business with Chinese officials. It was passed unanimously through the House and the Senate and still requires the approval of US President Donald Trump.
Beijing has condemned the US measures as interference in China's internal affairs and has threatened to impose «strong counter measures»
