Honduras: New migrant caravan begins amid pandemic

Hundreds of people gathered on Wednesday in San Pedro Sula to start a new migrant caravan towards Guatemala. Participants of this new caravan, with backpacks to carry their belongings, and many of them with face masks, have the goal of reaching the United States, where they believe their living conditions will improve. Jorge Escobar, a construction worker, explained that he is leaving Honduras «because in this country we can no longer endure hunger, without work, unemployment, crime — there is everything in this country, so you have to go to another safer country.» The caravan, organised through social networks, is the third this year, and it comes just two weeks after Guatemala reopened its borders, after keeping them closed for several months in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
