Guatemala: Protesters burn dolls outside Congress amid penal code reforms

Dozens protested in front of the Congress of the Republic, in Guatemala City, burning figures depicting the deputies, in protest against Wednesday’s reforms to the penal code that is largely seen as benefiting politicians involved with corruption, on Thursday. The rejection of the pact between deputies, which would primarily benefit politicians investigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) and the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig), brought out a wide spectrum of Guatemalan society. On Tuesday, Guatemala’s parliament voted against lifting the immunity surrounding President Jimmy Morales that would have seen the president face trial for corruption charges.
