Guatemala: Armed civilian groups patrol streets to enforce COVID-containment measures

Groups of armed civilians patrol the streets of San Vicente Pacaya, in southern Guatemala, where they say they are seeking to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by enforcing curfews and sanitation measures. Footage filmed on Sunday shows men armed with shotguns and pistols setting up a checkpoint on a highway and measuring a motorcyclist's body temperature. Organised under the name Civil Society Pacaya, these ‘patrollers’, as they call themselves, move around the city to ensure that the population comply with the use of the face masks, and fulfil the night-time curfew.
Guatemala has registered 29,355 cases of COVID-19, and 1,219 people have died with the disease, according to data registered by Johns Hopkins University.
