Greece: Wildfires spark wave of solidarity in Mati after 85 lives lost

According to a local resident the 'amount of solidarity' has been so great that it made her feel 'as though maybe not everything is in vain.' Red Cross volunteers embarked on reconnaissance missions to search the abandoned houses and provide help to the residents still staying in the area. «Under the coordination of the fire department, we are preparing to go for research, reconnaissance and support missions to the houses and the people living in Mati,» explained a Red Cross representative. Fires broke out in 15 different parts of Attica region on Monday night and quickly spiralled out of control due to strong winds. At least 85 people, including children and infants, have lost their lives and the death toll is expected to rise with dozens still missing.
