Greece: Wildfire-affected village wakes up to human tragedy

Rescuers found the bodies of 26 adults and children who reportedly hugged each other as they died on a sea cliff, as wildfires ripped through the village of Mati. Residents fleeing the fires first sought to escape by car, before abandoning vehicles and heading towards the coast. It seemed their route was blocked and they died a mere 15-metres from the sea. One woman described the incident as 'crazy' after entering what remained of her house. «The fire came from above, burned the rooftop, and the rooftop collapsed,» another witness recalled. «We couldn't breathe as we tried to call the firefighters for help.» At least 60 people have died in wildfires in the tourist area between Rafina and Nea Makri, near Athens. More than 150 have been injured. Authorities are concerned that the death toll could rise, with many persons still reported missing. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras declared three days of national mourning.
