Manfred Weber, the candidate of the European People’s Party for President of the European Commission, launched his campaign in Greece on Tuesday during a speech in Athens.
Germany based Weber, who is the front-runner to replace incumbant Jean-Claude Juncker after the May European Parliament elections, began his Europe-wide tour in Greece by warning against the anti-EU message of populist parties... Еще.
«When Le Pen is doing campaigning in France, she stands in front of people and tells the French citizens 'be proud about your nation, and to hell with Europe.' They are creating national emotions again. Egoistic understanding about the future of Europe,» he said.
Weber went on to quote a member of his party who said «Bavaria is my home, Germany is my nation and Europe, Europe is my future, and I don't allow any nationalist to create a split out of these identities.»
He told his enthusiastic Athens audience that «To be a proud Greek and to be a European, that is the same ladies and gentlemen.»
