Greece: Shia Muslims self-flagellate to mark Ashura in Piraeus

Members of the Shia community in Piraeus celebrated the Shia Muslim festival of Ashura with a traditional self-flagellation ceremony, Sunday. The men chanted, beat their chests and whipped themselves with chains bearing blades, often until they bled. Ashura, which takes place on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic Hijri calendar, is a day of mourning which commemorates the killing of Husayn...
